France-headquartered energy generation and storage developer Neoen Australia has entered virtual battery contracts with energy retailers, Sydney-based and South Korea-headquartered Hanwha Energy Australia-owned, Nectr, and Japanese conglomerate Marubeni Corporation-owned SmartestEnergy.

The Nectr contract will provide up to two-hour and four-hour capacity services from the 845 MW / 2.3 GWh Western Downs Battery Stages 2 and 3, while Stage 3 will deliver up to four-hour capacity services to SmartestEnergy.

A virtual battery offer is a solution designed by Neoen to allow a large electricity user or retailer to mimic a grid-scale battery, without having to build or own one.

Proprietary software developed in-house by Neoen to manage the virtual asset, enables virtual charge or discharge of contracted share of the battery capacity, and can dispatch the virtual storage capacity in 5-minute trading intervals enabling flexibility in the National Electricity Market (NEM).

In 2022, Neoen Australia announced a 7-year virtual battery agreement with AGL Energy for a capacity of 70 MW in New South Wales (NSW) to be supported by the 100 MW / 200 MWh Capital Battery in Canberra.

In 2025, Neoen Australia announced it had signed virtual battery contracts with London-headquartered, Brisbane-based Shell Energy Australia and public energy company and French government majority-owned, ENGIE.

Western Downs Battery 1.2 GWh Stage 3 construction is underway and 312 Tesla Megapack 2XL units are expected to be installed by the end of 2026.
