North West Transmission Developments to start construction
The notice follows the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal’s recent decision to uphold the Tasmanian Planning Commission’s approval of the project’s planning permit.
TasNetworks’ NWTD Project Director, Richie Sheather, said it was a significant milestone.
“Issuing a notice to proceed represents years of planning, design, approvals and preparation,” Sheather said. “Our focus now is on delivering this critical infrastructure for Tasmania safely and responsibly while continuing to work closely with landholders and the community.”
“TasNetworks is building NWTD for Tasmanians who want the lowest possible future prices, strong climate action, clean energy careers, and enough clean energy for Tasmania and Australia’s future.”
NWTD is a major upgrade of Tasmania’s electricity network to ensure it remains sustainable and strong now and into the future. Stage 1 includes 129 kilometres of new and upgraded transmission lines, as well as new substations and a switching station, extending from Cressy to Burnie via Sheffield.
The project will support new renewable energy developments and create significant opportunities for Tasmanian communities and businesses, while helping keep future electricity prices as low as possible.
TasNetworks is also investing into local communities through its $10 million community investment program.
