Two-stage pyrolysis process turns waste solar panels into silicon carbide
Russian scientists have developed a process that combines pyrolysis at 500 C with electric arc treatment above 1,800 C. The resulting solid product contained up to 61% silicon carbide, a material used in power electronics and refractory ceramics.

Bilayer transparent conductive film for electrostatic dust removal achieves 96.36% cleaning rate on PV panels
Chinese researchers have developed a bilayer transparent conductive film for electrostatic dust removal from PV panels. An 80 nm magnesium fluoride coating offered the best balance of optoelectronic and cleaning performance, with dust removal reaching 96.36%.
AI-assisted method maps PV module losses from a single luminescence image
An international research team has developed an AI-assisted method that quantifies PV module power losses from a single luminescence image. The approach achieved an overall error of about 0.5% in tests on 300 field-retrieved modules and was demonstrated using drone-based imaging at a 186 kW solar farm.

Scientists build 17%-efficient semi-transparent perovskite solar cell based on sputter-resistant aluminum oxide layer
Researchers replaced the conventional 20 nm SnOâ‚“ buffer layer with just 3 nm of ALD-deposited AlOâ‚“, which protected inverted perovskite cells from ITO sputtering damage while maintaining efficient charge extraction. The resulting devices achieved efficiencies above 17% in semi-transparent cells and 26% in perovskite-silicon tandems, while reducing material use and fabrication time.
New electrode design increases battery energy density by up to 15%
Fraunhofer ISE and its partners have developed thicker electrodes that could increase battery cell energy density by 10% to 15% without adding weight. The PFAS-free, solvent-free concept has been demonstrated in lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and zinc-ion cells and is designed for cost-effective mass production.

Scientists turn end-of-life PV silicon into high-value silicon nitride
Researchers have developed a method to upcycle silicon recovered from end-of-life PV modules into high-value silicon nitride. The process achieved recycled silicon purity of 99.95% through optimised milling, acid etching, and sedimentation before nitridation.
Italian scientists build glass-free flexible silicon PV modules via roll-to-roll
Researchers have developed a glass-free flexible crystalline-silicon module architecture based on commercial IBC cells and a PET/EVA stack manufactured via roll-to-roll hot lamination. The 2 × 2 mini-module retained 96.12% of its initial efficiency after 672 hours of outdoor testing at a fixed bending radius of 150 mm.
