Backed by a $150 million commitment from the WA government, the Kalgoorlie Vanadium Battery Energy Storage System (VBESS) project seeks to deliver a locally made 50 MW/10-hour (500 MWh) VFB in 2029.

The project aims to boost energy resilience, support long-duration storage solutions, and catalyse WA’s vanadium and battery manufacturing industries, while also playing a key role in diversifying WA’s economy and demonstrating the state’s long-duration energy storage capabilities.

AVESS’ stage one EOI submission will be delivered by a consortium of WA companies including shovel-ready vanadium producer Atlantic Vanadium Pty Ltd (Atlantic Vanadium), AVESS, and ASX-listed Lycopodium Ltd (ASX: LYL; Lycopodium), a design and project delivery engineer.

This consortium brings together strong local capability across WA’s vanadium supply chain, aligning with the WA government’s focus on practical, achievable local content outcomes.

The submission will leverage AVESS’ ownership of KORID Energy Co., Ltd’s (KORID Energy) world-class 25 kW stack technology, as well as the capabilities of its consortium partners Atlantic Vanadium and Lycopodium.

Commenting on the significance of the Kalgoorlie VBESS to WA’s vanadium supply chain, AVESS Managing Director Young Yu said: “The Kalgoorlie VBESS is a significant opportunity to deliver a locally manufactured VFB at scale. AVESS is well-placed to deliver a compelling, homegrown VFB solution, backed by our worldclass stack technology and the expertise of our consortium partners.”

“We will continue to work with our government and industry partners to showcase how AVESS’ VFB solution can unlock economic opportunities for the Goldfields, catalyse WA’s vanadium sector, and support the decarbonisation of our grid.”

The stage one EOI closes on 30 January 2026. Stage two business case assessments are expected to commence before Q2 2026, with a preferred proponent selected in H2 2026.

AVESS’ participation in the Kalgoorlie VBESS EOI process complements our upcoming deployment of a locally manufactured 50 kW / 200 kWh VFB at Atlantic Vanadium’s Windimurra Vanadium project, strengthening our positioning in Australian VFB manufacturing.
