International energy solutions company SMA Altenso has officially opened its Australian subsidiary, Altenso Australia, with offices in Sydney, to bring its renewable energy expertise in utility-scale battery storage and power conversion for hydrogen applications to Australia’s clean energy transition.
This expansion marks a strategic step in the system integrator’s global growth strategy, aiming at the realisation of a GW-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) pipeline as well as further hydrogen projects in Australia.
Altenso Australia is already working on two major battery storage projects, with project developer Avenis Energy, each capable of storing 480 MWh of energy, with ready-to-build status expected in the next few months.
BESS are widely recognised as essential enablers of high renewable energy penetration, not only by firming the intermittency of renewable sources but also by enhancing grid stability, reliability, and security.
Julien Tissandier, Managing Director at Altenso Australia, says: “We’re excited to bring Altenso’s expertise to the Australian market, where we’ll add fresh perspectives and competitive energy to this rapidly evolving sector. The first projects, together with our strategic partner Avenis, represent just the beginning of Altenso’s Australian pipeline and underscore our deep commitment to enabling Australia’s clean energy transition.”
While SMA Australia provides PV, battery, and hybrid inverter technology solutions across residential, commercial, and utility-scale applications, SMA Altenso specialises in large-scale utility projects, acting as a system integrator for complex energy infrastructure, including utility-scale battery storage, hydrogen applications, and hybrid solutions for both off-grid and grid-connected energy supplies.
SMA Altenso brings more than a decade of international experience in delivering complex energy projects. Globally, the company has installed over 1.5 GW of large-scale battery storage systems and delivered more than 1 GW power conversion units to hydrogen projects.
The launch of Altenso Australia is part of SMA Altenso’s global expansion strategy, extending its operations beyond Germany to South Africa and Australia.
