Energy solutions provider VoltX Energy Chief Operating Officer David Sedighi said one in 12 households now have a home battery system, with the majority of early adopters those who have already invested in solar energy.
“40% of Australian households have rooftop solar panels and figures from the Climate Council show almost 10% of homes in NSW with solar now also have a home battery,” Mr Sedighi said.
Suburbs across Queensland and New South Wales have led the charge, with the number of installations spiking in areas such as:
- NSW: Marsden Park, Kellyville, Liverpool, Campbelltown and the Central Coast
- QLD: Caboolture, Beenleigh, Springfield, Toowoomba, and the Sunshine Coast hinterland
Data shows 57% of properties have solar in postcode 2,765 in Sydney’s west like Marsden Park, Box Hill and Riverstone, compared to suburbs in postcode 2065 like Crows Nest, Greenwich, and Naremburn where just 20.8% of homes have solar.
“We are noticing newer suburbs and those further from the city are more likely to have a home battery. We think this is because many of those newer properties already had solar panels because of BASIX requirements and have seen their power bills decrease,” Mr Sedighi said.
“However, solar alone can’t eliminate a power bill no matter how much energy a household might be generating, because when the sun goes down you are relying on electricity from the grid.
“That’s not the case with a home battery. All of that excess energy a home has produced feeds into the home battery system where it is stored,” he said.
Mr Sedighi said households were not waiting any time in taking more control of their energy bills with home batteries now more affordable than they’ve ever been.
“With power bills more expensive than ever, more Australians are wanting to install a home battery because within three years it’s paid for itself,” Mr Sedighi said.
In its first month, more than 19,500 households accessed the Federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate, covering around 30% of the upfront costs.
“That’s a huge number when you consider there were about 75,000 battery storage systems installed last year, up 47 per cent from 2023. This is very much just the beginning and we forecast Australia will hit 160,000 home batteries in the next 12 months,” Mr Sedighi said.
VoltX Energy said the biggest barrier was the small number of qualified installers.
“People need to ensure their installer is properly accredited and qualified. There’s an industry-wide shortage and people need to be very careful to go with a reputable company.”
