Transgrid’s existing Wagga Wagga depot would be home to the new Energy Training Centre to train skilled workers in constructing high-voltage transmission towers and lines, starting with the nation-critical HumeLink project.
Executive General Manager of Major Projects Gordon Taylor said Transgrid is committed to investing in the nation’s energy workforce and addressing skills and jobs shortages in regional NSW.
“The clean energy transition is creating unprecedented demand for skilled workers, with Transgrid alone forecasting the need for 7,000 personnel over the next decade to deliver our pipeline of essential transmission projects,” Taylor said. “Transgrid and our construction partners are getting on with the job of delivering essential transmission infrastructure to provide access to cleaner and cheaper renewable energy for Australian households and businesses before coal generation retires.”
“This fit-for-purpose training centre will produce a home-grown workforce with local jobs for local people in regional NSW. Each year the centre will deliver hands-on, end-to-end training to skilled workers who are essential to build transmission towers. Workers trained at the new centre will form the backbone of the future transmission line construction workforce to support Australia’s clean energy transition.”
“We are pleased to be maximising the benefits from our major projects for the Riverina with training, skills development and employment opportunities that will leave a lasting social and economic legacy for the region.”
The Energy Training Centre will deliver structured, specialised training in tower construction and high-voltage line stringing in a controlled, non-live environment, improving safety, workforce competency and productivity.
The centre will include training rooms, an office, common spaces, amenities, storage and first aid facilities, a training tower, line stringing assets, and a carpark.
A development application has been lodged with Wagga Wagga City Council seeking approval for the training centre building and carpark on vacant land at Transgrid’s existing Copland Street depot. The already approved training tower is currently being constructed on the site.
