With thousands of kilometres of fibre optic cable deployed across Victoria, these networks play a vital role in protecting the electricity grid, in keeping the lights on and ensuring the safety of all Victorians.
“No single distribution business in Victoria has the full range of internal fibre optic capability. By establishing this team, Zinfra are offering a comprehensive, end-to-end solution for our clients, offering design, construction, and maintenance services that will help ensure the safety and reliability of their fibre optic networks,” said General Manager of Power Services South, Vincent Marziale.
“Operating alongside our electricity construction teams, we can offer in-house skills and expertise to our clients to support the construction, maintenance, and fault response for these essential networks.”
Initially comprising six locally based specialists, the team includes telecommunications line workers and highly skilled fibre splicers, capable of executing complex cable joins that are critical to maintaining high network performance.
The team will primarily focus on Victoria’s distribution and transmission businesses, operating with a 24/7 on-call model, they will provide end-to-end support across construction, emergency response, and fault rectification.
“While the team’s initial focus is on Victoria’s distribution, transmission, and emerging renewables energy sectors, Zinfra will continue to assess opportunities to expand services into adjacent industries where the secure and high-speed nature of fibre optic communication is also essential,” Marziale said.
“The new team highlights Zinfra’s commitment to continuously developing its capabilities to support its partners and the wider Victorian electricity network.”
Fibre optic networks form the digital backbone of the electricity system, enabling high-speed, secure communication between substations and other critical assets.
Zinfra continues to evolve the team in the future, including exploring opportunities for training and specialist apprenticeships as the business grows this offering.
