The Pre-Apprenticeship Program for Women offers participants hands-on experience, mentorship from industry professionals, and a comprehensive introduction to the skills and knowledge required for a successful career in energy.
The five-week program, starting on 3 March 2025, will equip participants with valuable insights into various aspects of the industry, from electrical engineering to project management, all within a supportive and inclusive environment.
Transgrid’s Executive General Manager of People and Culture Stephen McSweeney said: “We are committed to fostering diversity and inclusion within our workforce. Transgrid is proud to provide young women in regional NSW with the opportunity to join Australia’s largest transmission business and help deliver the clean energy transition.
“The Pre-Apprenticeship Program for Women provides hands-on experience with real field crews and highly interactive nationally recognised training, giving participants an opportunity to decide if a career in the energy industry is right for them,” McSweeney said.
Upon completion of the program, a select number of participants will get the opportunity to continue their training and development in Transgrid’s Apprenticeship Program, which begins later this year.
Transgrid Apprentice Substation Technician Janika Walsh completed the first Pre-Apprenticeship Program for Women in 2022 before successfully transitioning to the Apprentice Program last year.
“I applied for the pre-apprentice program because I wanted to leave school early and wasn’t sure if the electrical trade was for me. So, for me, it was a bit of a trial to see if it would be something I’d enjoy doing for a living,” Walsh said.
“Working in the electrical industry, especially Transgrid, provides you with so many opportunities. The electrical industry is always growing and changing and there’s so many opportunities within it.”
“My advice to girls who are thinking of doing the pre-apprentice program is that you should give it a shot, it’s a perfect way for you to get your foot in the door and get a feel for what kind of work is involved here at Transgrid,” Walsh said.
