SmartestEnergy will purchase renewable energy from the 400 MW Stage 1 New England Solar project, located near Uralla, New South Wales. SmartestEnergy will strategically make renewable energy available to commercial and industrial customers throughout Australia.

New England Solar is ACEN Australia’s first operational project and the 400 MW first stage has been built with the support of host landholders, First Nations people, and the Uralla community. At full development, the 720 MW project will be one of Australia’s largest solar projects participating in the National Electricity Market (NEM) providing clean renewable energy to power around 300,000 average Australian homes.

Commitment to communities and the environment

New England Solar is not only an environmentally conscious initiative but also a boon for local communities. It has committed to invest over $7 million into the Uralla region over the next 25+ years. Additionally, it will generate up to 15 operational jobs for over three decades, with approximately 80% of the construction peak workforce for Stage 1 hailing from the New England region. Moreover, the project is poised to offset a remarkable 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.

“I’m truly proud of our agreement with ACEN Australia and the essential role it plays in advancing the sustainable energy sector. ACEN’s approach sets a high standard, showcasing how involving local communities from the outset not only enriches renewable projects but also contributes to a more inclusive and prosperous net zero future for all,” says Robert Owens, CEO of SmartestEnergy Australia.

Honouring Indigenous Heritage

ACEN Australia’s commitment extends to honouring Indigenous heritage through a robust engagement with Registered Aboriginal Parties (RAPs). This collaboration includes measures such as the establishment of access tracks to culturally significant sites, cultural awareness sessions, and awarding contracts to local Indigenous businesses, contributing to the preservation of Australia’s rich cultural heritage.

ACEN Australia Managing Director David Pollington stated, “Just as the Anaiwan people in the NSW’s New England region have been doing for thousands of years, today ACEN Australia seeks to harness the sun’s resources using new technologies. Our New England Solar project is being built with the support of the Anaiwan First Nations people who have been a part of the project since the beginning. The relationship has evolved into a model that is providing meaningful opportunities for First Nations to participate in and share in the benefits that Australia’s growing renewable energy industry offers. Equally, this relationship has given ACEN Australia the opportunity to improve our knowledge and understanding of history, culture and achievements, working towards our shared commitment to contribute to reconciliation in Australia.”

“ACEN has a bold strategy to help Australia transition to a clean energy future, and we are excited by this first offtake with SmartestEnergy, enabling us to bring more renewable energy projects to life and clean electricity for Australian homes and businesses”, he said.
