C4NET to start offering electricity data access services

Thanks to a generous grant from the Victorian government, organisations informing the energy transition can easily access critical data in one format for all Victorian electricity network distributors.

C4NET’s Data Access Service is a ‘first of its kind’ collaboration with the Victorian electricity distribution networks to easily provide Advanced Metering Infrastructure Data (AMI) to parties interested in advancing the energy transition. This includes aggregated consumption data, information about the penetration of various localised renewable energy sources and certain network operational information.

Having the right data is a key requirement for anyone wanting to participate in or study the transformation of the energy market and with many renewable projects being fast-tracked, the ability to access data via C4NET’s data services and benefit from their data expertise comes at the perfect time.

“We know that data is at the heart of the energy transition and the demand for information on how new technologies and resources can integrate into the existing operating system will only continue to increase,” C4NET chief executive James Seymour said. “Australia is at the forefront of this global shift towards distributed energy and, with high penetration of smart meters in Victoria, we have a localised competitive advantage to understand, integrate and commercialise what will become the new smart grid. We’re proud to support both the distribution networks as well as new entrants into the market, academia, and research organisations with clear, concise access to data that will help progress our energy system transition.”

C4NET, which was established by the Victorian Government in 2017, has previously consulted to government organisations and councils through to academics and research organisations.

C4NET and its distribution network service provider (DNSP) partners are establishing a single-point service to request and obtain electricity data. Some have previously found accessing credible data to be a time consuming and nebulous process, but with C4NET organisations requesting data can consult with their industry experts to ensure they are getting the data that they need, in a timely manner.

C4NET will work with any party seeking data and best match the data available to their needs and then work with DNSPs to extract and aggregate that data to ensure that it can be provided in compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements for the handling of sensitive or private information.

The data that can be accessed include AMI smart meter data, solar and other Distributed Energy Resources (DER) penetration, trend data, and certain network performance data and power systems trend data.

The service facilitates access to data from multiple sites to assist research and analysis.
