A twenty year veteran of the Australian energy industry says many households are recording energy bill spikes of up to 40% in April and May compared to the same time last year, as people work and study from home.
‘There’s a sentiment out there that global warming and carbon emissions have paused during Covid-19, but the fact is that a lot of energy consumption has shifted from industry to the domestic front,’ said Domenic Capomolla, CEO of Tango Energy.
‘What we’re encouraging consumers concerned about the environmental impact of their home energy use to do is to mitigate that contribution by signing up with an energy provider that supports renewable energy.’
With groups like the World Economic Forum and the World Health Organisation suggesting that pandemics like Covid-19 are set to become the new norm in the future, Mr Capomolla says we may see a lot more of a trend of working from home, and therefore larger greenhouse gas contributions from the domestic sector.
‘If we’re going to see more pandemics like coronavirus, as suggested by health and economic forecasters, it stands to reason there will be a lot more working from home,’ said Mr Capomolla.
‘And with that shift there will be a greater greenhouse contribution from the domestic sector.
‘For consumers who are concerned about greenhouse gases, or who thought that what happens on the domestic front isn’t a significant contributor to reducing carbon pollution, we’re saying you can do something about it. Sign up to an energy provider that supports renewable energy,’ said Mr Capomolla.
The lack of clarity in renewable energy policy in Australia has meant that carbon neutral energy options aren’t as broad as the renewable energy industry would like, but there are options.
‘There are energy providers that supports renewable energy and carbon neutral energy plans out there at the moment, which you can find by visiting tangoenergy.com.au,’ said Mr Capomolla.
