Northam, which is now operational, was the final location to be completed in the Southwest Interconnected System (SWIS), with Synergy having completed its portion of the WA EV Network.

Synergy Chief Executive Officer David Fyfe said electric vehicle (EV) drivers can now travel between Kalbarri in the north, Kalgoorlie in the east and Albany in the south, using the WA EV Network.

“So far, more than 24,360 charges have occurred via charging stations located in the network,” Fyfe said.

The entire network is expected to be operational later this year. It will span a massive 7,000 km, stretching from Mundrabilla, near the South Australian border, to Kununurra in the far north of Western Australia. Once completed, there will be 110 EV fast charging points across 49 locations, with drivers able to top up their vehicles in as little as 20 minutes.

Providing EV charging infrastructure across WA is key to supporting the continued uptake of EVs in WA while also supporting regional development and tourism opportunities.

The WA EV Network was listed on TIME magazine’s list of Top 100 World’s Greatest Places to visit in 2024. It is being delivered by Synergy and Horizon Power.

The state government is continuing to plan for future charging infrastructure requirements through the Sectoral emissions reduction strategy (SERS) announced in December 2023. Through the SERS, a statewide strategy for future EV charging infrastructure will be developed to support transition to net zero emissions by 2050.
