In 2022, Origin Energy announced that it will bring forward the earliest possible closure date of the Eraring Power Station to August 2025, seven years earlier than previously scheduled.

The Waratah Super Battery forms part of the New South Wales government’s response to that announcement and is deemed as the most suitable solution that could be delivered in time to ensure the security of energy supply to the affected regions. Once completed the Waratah Super Battery will be the biggest in Australia’s grid.

This project is being delivered as a Priority Transmission Infrastructure Project under the Electricity Infrastructure Investment Act 2020.

Assisting our partners to deliver the best outcomes

Following a competitive procurement process, the Energy Corporation of NSW (EnergyCo) formally appointed Akaysha Energy as the successful SIPS Service Provider late last year.

Caitlin Barnes, Project Manager, says “We are working with Akaysha and its delivery partners to provide trusted technical advice for the timely completion of this critical project.

“Together, we will support Australia’s energy transition and play our part in building a clean, reliable and resilient electrical supply for our communities in NSW.”

Akaysha will be responsible for the construction of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). It will be capable of providing an active power capacity of 850MW and useable energy storage capacity of 1680MWh.

“From my perspective the WSP team have been well organised, responsive, well informed and genuinely helping the Akaysha team achieve the best performance for our project,” says Nick Finch, Head of Engineering, Akaysha Energy.

“This is greatly appreciated.”
