With about 1.6 GW of Sunny Central inverters sold in 2020, the SMA Large-Scale Energy System is the solution of choice for 15 major projects across Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. With a total market size of 6.5 gigawatts utility-scale solar inverters according to SMA estimates, this corresponds to a market share of 65%.
Significant highlights of the year included closing out PV inverter supply for the Western Downs Green Power Hub with the leading renewable energy developer NEOEN. With 460 MW of installed capacity, it will become the largest solar farm in Australia to date. SMA has also locked in Australia’s second-largest solar farm in agreement with Sterling and Wilson for the 162 MW Columboola solar farm. In the hybrid market, SMA Australia secured the delivery of the new Sunny Central UP inverter to juwi’s Esperance Power Project in Western Australia. Also, the Service Sales and Repowering team was able to conclude important contracts this year.
“The renewable energy transition in the Australian market has been genuinely remarkable, and 2020 has been a record-setting year, despite the challenges with the global COVID-19 pandemic. Just 5 years ago, SMA supplied the first project of more than10 MW into the Australian market; this year alone, we have closed 1.6GW!” says Joshua Birmingham, Project Sales Director at SMA Australia. “SMA is proud to be leading Australia’s solar and renewable energy transition and remain at the global forefront of the decarbonisation of electricity generation”.
SMA has had a presence in Australia for over 20 years and offers solutions for centralised and decentralised PV power plants as well as for residential PV applications and PV hybrid projects. The local team consists of over 60 skilled engineering, sales, marketing and service staff to offer the best solutions for home, business and large-scale applications.
