Swiss electricity infrastructure giant ABB has supplied a large battery storage and microgrid solution to Western Australia’s Pilbara region. The system was installed at Alinta Energy’s 178 MW gas-fired Newman Power Station, which supplies a major iron-ore mine in the mineral-rich region.

Western Australia energy provider Synergy has named RCR Tomlinson as EPC contractor for the expansion of the Greenough River solar farm from 10MW to 40MW.   

Construction and building industry superannuation fund Cbus Super has stepped forward, alongside the Dutch Infrastructure Fund (DIF) as the majority investors in Synergy’s solar and wind portfolio. The newly formed Bright Energy Investments vehicle will clear the way for Synergy to develop a pipeline of large scale solar and wind projects in WA.

While great at delivering hype around battery storage, Tesla’s inability to develop significant volumes of its residential storage units to WA is frustrating installers. With customers interested in buying a Tesla system but supply not meeting demand, it is ‘blocking’ residential storage uptake in the state.

Carnegie Clean Energy will rely on Large-scale Generation Certificate (LGC) and WA capacity market payments on top of wholesale electricity prices on the SWIS to make its 10 MW Northam solar project work. The company broke ground on the project yesterday, in a ceremony attended by WA treasurer and energy minister Ben Wyatt.

Carnegie Clean Energy has been awarded a $471,000 grant to develop a solar and battery storage solution for the supply of offshore oil and gas platforms. The grant has been provided National Energy Resources Australia (NERA), a body that aims to enhance the competitiveness of Australia’s non-renewable energy sector.

WA grid operator Western Power has launched a tender to provide stand-alone power systems in up to 60 locations. Building on a trial program, the systems will include solar and battery storage supported with backup diesel generators.

Perth-based Carnegie Clean Energy is expanding its early-stage solar and storage development project development. It’s latest site acquisition is slated for a 10 MW solar PV farm and 10 MWh battery site in WA.

Western Australian households and small businesses may have to continue to rely on Synergy for their electricity. Media reports indicate that the WA Labor Government is backing away from plans to introduce full retail contestability (FRC) for residential and small commercial electricity consumers.

Carnegie Clean Energy has received approval to negotiate the lease for a 250ha site in the WA’s Eastern Goldfields, on which it hopes to develop a 100 MW solar and 20 MWh battery storage array. The Mungari Solar Farm would supply power to a region currently suffering from electricity supply constraints.
