The NSW Solar for Apartment Residents (SoAR) Grant Program provides funding to body corporates. This can be used to install shared rooftop solar systems on eligible apartment buildings and other multi-unit dwellings in NSW.
The Australian and NSW governments are partnering to provide $25 million for the program.
Many apartment residents face barriers to installing rooftop solar due to them:
- renting their apartment
- not being able to afford the initial capital outlay
- difficulty securing agreement from their owner’s corporation.
Since opening in February 2025, the program has approved 33 applications. This has set up over 1,100 kW of rooftop solar for over 534 apartments.
The estimated energy bill savings are up to $600 a year for each apartment.
The NSW SoAR program is part of the Australian government’s $100 million Community Solar Banks initiative. This initiative will help up to 25,000 households across the country to install shared solar and clean energy technology.
The program has been extended until March 2026 to give people more time to apply.
