Breakthrough renewables plan revealed

If elected, it will:

  • Deliver at least 50% renewables by 2030;
  • Ensure that all of the NSW Government’s electricity comes from renewable energy sources by 2025;
  • Hold a Climate Change Summit and introduce a Climate Change Act into Parliament;
  • Deliver zero net emissions by 2050.

These commitments come on top of previous promises that a NSW Labor Government will:

  • Create 500,000 new solar homes with a $2,200 rebate for solar;
  • 7 gigawatts of large-scale renewables by 2030, with 6 gigawatts delivered through reverse auctions and 1 gigawatt through a new State-owned corporation; and
  • $11 million to train and accredit renewable energy electricians.

Smart Energy Council response

The Smart Energy Council strongly welcomes today’s announcements by NSW Labor and urges the NSW Government to match these commitments.

Smart Energy Council CEO John Grimes said:

“New South Wales will go from follower to leader if these policies are implemented.

The truth is New South Wales has missed out on the jobs, investment and business opportunities that flow from a strong smart energy economy.

It is simply not good enough that only 13% of NSW’s energy comes from renewable sources, and only 6% of the NSW Government’s own electricity comes from renewables.

We are facing a climate emergency, and we must do whatever we can to maximise the amount of solar, storage and renewable energy that we are generating.”
