There are many paths to reach 100% emissions-free electricity. The US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has released “Examining Supply-Side Options to Achieve 100% Clean Electricity by 2035,” which looks at multiple scenarios.
NREL concludes that a 90% clean grid will have a low incremental cost, and that it can be built primarily with new wind, solar, storage, and transmission. However, the last 10% will present financial challenges, requiring research and new technologies.
The lab points to four “critical hurdles” to reach 100%:
- Dramatic acceleration of electrification and increased efficiency in demand
- New energy infrastructure installed rapidly throughout the country
- Expanded clean energy manufacturing and supply chains
- Continued research, development, demonstration, and deployment support to bring emerging technologies to the market (the last 10% challenge)
Across all of their main scenarios, the lowest cost electricity mix is dominated by wind and solar, which provide most of the generation (60% to 80%). By the end of this decade, solar will require additions of 40 GWac to 90 GWac per year, and wind will require additions of 70 GW to 150 GW per year. By 2035, the United States will need to have added 2 TW of wind and solar combined.
Other accomplishments that must also happen by 2035 include the deployment of 5 GW to 8 GW of new hydropower, 3 GW to 5 GW of geothermal, and 120 GW to 350 GW of diurnal storage. Hitting these targets will require US$330 billion to US$740 billion in overall capital.
Another complex issue is that the models require between 1,400 and 10,100 miles of new high-capacity lines each year. NREL says this will triple the deployment volume rate being installed today.
Solar in the United States will need to massively increase deployment, with installation rates two to eight times that of the 15 GW of capacity that was added in 2020. These future annual installation volumes will be 25% to 110% of the entire capacity installed throughout the world in 2020.

The ONLY LIMITATION is in the MIND of the Ability of using PV Panels.. specially in the form of AgriVoltaics (AV)… to meet ALL the Energy Needs of the USA…. with no need for Coal, Gas, Oil, Nuclear, Wind, Hydro etc… either JUST AV.. ALL BY ITSELF…
NOT SURE WHAT OR WHERE THE PROBLEM IS IN NREL…
Using <100,000km2 of the 4 Million km2 of Farmland in thecUSA… <2.5%… AgriVoltaics (AV) can generate 18,000 TWhrs /yr needed to MEET ALL OF THE ENERGY NEEDS (not just present Electricity Users) of the USA by 2050… with a 15TW AV-PV System and lots and lots of spare Farmland and Sunshine too … for future growth …..
[ In fact, using just 25% of its Farmland.. the USA can generate ALL THE ELECTRICITY / NEEDED IN THE WORLD… 180,000TWhrs/yr… with a 150TW AV-PV System ].
ALL THIS WITH EXISTING TECHNOLOGY OF PV PANELS AND A CONSERVATIVE VALUE OF 150 W/m2… (today itself … one can get 200W/m2 already) and a similar Conservative Value of 1,200hrs/yr at Rated Capacity (the typical range is 1,200-1,500hrs/yr at Rated Capacity..)…
Not sure where NREL "sees the problem"… not enough Solar Energy or Solar Exposure Land…??? …. which the above refutes completly…
It appears NREL has a hidden (illegal..???) Agenda of ensuring Polluters CONTINUE TO … POLLUTE ….
The only "head in the sand" problem can be S2S …. Sunset-To-Surise …. Energy Storage.
Even this can EASILY be met by using UHES (see youtube channel zeropollution2050 ..UHES) with its abundant Hydro Sites ready to be converted using UHES and provide the needed 4,000TWhrs/yr or 12TWhrs/Day .. for 24hrs Solar Electricity…
It is these "Hidden Agenda" of Protecting the Polluters… that prevents Mankind from Ushering in a Zero Pollution Earth by 2050 or earlier…. and put a halt to the 9 Million Pre-Mature Deaths Annually and 275Million DALY of Suffering caused by Pollution around the Globe…. TODAY …. ASAP…
To put things in perspective… the above Deaths & Suffering TODAY match the same Effects on Mankind during the WW-II Years… yes.. POLLUTION IS THAT BIG A BEAST… !!!!
