The Thala Beach Nature Reserve, 60 kilometres north of Cairns and 16 kilometres south of Port Douglas in tropical Far North Queensland has installed a 110 kW solar and battery energy storage system to enhance the property’s eco-tourism and sustainable operations.

The 145 acre luxury eco resort and wildlife retreat will use the system to reduce its need for diesel generators, reliance on grid electricity while lowering overall carbon emissions.

The solar array will contribute to powering guest accommodation, an on premises restaurant, and key resort facilities.

Thala Beach Nature Reserve Resort Director Seton Prettejohn said the facility’s commitment to sustainability is its core value.

“This solar initiative represents an important milestone in reducing our carbon footprint while continuing to deliver a high-quality guest experience,” Prettejohn said.

The installation forms part of Thala’s broader sustainability strategy, which includes habitat restoration, waste reduction, and minimising single-use plastics.

Set within a private coastal reserve, the resort aims to lead by example, demonstrating how innovation can protect the natural environment within a commercial operation.
