Origin Energy has unveiled plans to build up to five big batteries as the Australian energy utility accelerates its transition to clean energy.

‘Dual circulation’ has one thing in common with many other major Chinese policy initiatives in that it’s not immediately apparent from its name as to what it means. First raised during a Politburo meeting in May, President Xi introduced this new strategy at the annual ‘Two Sessions’ later that month. It is clear that China’s leadership intends dual circulation to become an important part not only of China’s policy agenda for the next 12 months but to also feature prominently in the upcoming 14th five-year plan (2021-2025).  

Deakin University’s Hydrogen Test Bed is set to position regional Victoria at the cutting edge of hydrogen research. The facility and its research is looking to determine whether Australia’s current gas infrastructure can be repurposed for the use of clean hydrogen.

The South Australian government has followed up the launch of its Hydrogen Export Prospectus last week with a straight drive on the front foot, $37 million in funding for export infrastructure upgrades in support of the a $240 million green hydrogen and green ammonia project which will make South Australia a global leader.

Australia doesn’t yet export renewable energy. But the writing is on the wall: demand for Australia’s fossil fuel exports is likely to dwindle soon, and we must replace it at massive scale.

Mining giant Fortescue Metals Group is on track to transport workers at the company’s Christmas Creek iron ore mine with hydrogen-fuelled buses after gas supplier BOC confirmed it has been engaged to install renewable hydrogen production and refuelling facilities at the Pilbara site.

The Western Australian Government has given environmental approval to the first stage of the Asian Renewable Energy Hub, a 15 GW hybrid solar and wind plant. The approval is a massive step forward for the project, which will eventually reach 26 GW, and an even larger step forward for green hydrogen development in Australia for domestic use and export.

Global Energy Ventures announced to the ASX yesterday its design for the H2 Ship, a compressed hydrogen ship capable of transporting 2,000 tonnes of hydrogen from green hydrogen hubs in northern Australia to trading partners such as Singapore, Korea, China, and Japan.

Researchers from the University of New South Wales have run the numbers, run them again, and then run them a third time to make triply sure. Australia’s solar resources and the rapidly falling costs of solar-powered hydrogen production mean that the future hydrogen economy is green whether the Morrison Government likes it or not.

The Spanish energy company, which has hydrogen projects under way in its homeland and the United Kingdom, says it will allocate new resources to position itself at the forefront of the supply of renewables-powered hydrogen.
