Aldi, the German low-cost supermarket giant, has made a further solar pledge Down Under as the commercial and industrial PV market segment continues to grow at a fast pace.
The 31 new projects, comprising 30 arrays on stores and distribution centers in NSW and Queensland, are expected to generate a combined 6.3 GWh annually. The systems will be installed by Photon Energy.
“Photon Energy is very proud to be cooperating with ALDI to transform its stores into solar power generators capable of providing a large proportion of their daytime electricity consumption,” said Michael Gartner, Photon Energy MD, in a press release on Tuesday.
Once the projects are completed, Photon Energy will provide O&M services combined with a monitoring and control system.
The new installations add to the retailer’s Australian solar PV portfolio. Previously, Aldi installed close to 1 MW rooftop solar system at its distribution centre in Brendale, Queensland. The system was delivered by Epho Solar, following a successful commercial solar pilot program in 2016, which involved installations on numerous stores in NSW and Victoria.
In 2017, Todae Solar installed 2.3 MW of solar PV for Aldi, including a 1.5 MW solar system at its distribution facility in Prestons, NSW, and 100kW systems on eight of their retail stores in Western Australia.
Worldwide, Aldi is known for its corporate social responsibility and fondness for solar PV. In the U.K., for instance, the German retailer had 85,000 solar panels installed across nine distribution centers and 275 stores in 2017, and boasted an impressive 17,500 MWh of solar electricity per annum.
