Weekend read: Puerto Rican resilience

Before Puerto Rico had a chance to recover from Hurricane Maria, in 2017, it was rocked by earthquakes and then, in September 2022, the island was struck again – this time by Hurricane Fiona. These disasters severely impacted Puerto Rico’s infamously fragile power grid, but have emboldened local communities to take power into their own hands through solar and battery storage, and increasingly in the form of microgrids. Compelled by catastrophic circumstances, Puerto Rico must now push toward energy resilience and in the process may see itself become a model not just for other islands, but mainland grids as well.

Gravitricity to deploy prototype underground hydrogen storage system

Gravitricity, an Edinburgh-based storage specialist, aims to develop the first full-scale demonstration of its underground hydrogen storage solution by working with structural engineering contractor VSL Systems UK.

Giant battery goes online in China

Neoen press ‘go’ on 400 MWh Western Downs big battery construction

French renewable energy giant Neoen has begun construction on its 200 MW/400 MWh Western Downs Battery in Queensland, next to the developer’s 460 MWp Western Downs solar farm. The Western Downs Battery is Neoen’s fourth big battery in Australia and brings its storage portfolio to 776 MW/1,279 MWh in operation or under construction. 

Danish renewables giant buys Queensland clean energy hub

Danish investment firm Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners has sharpened its focus on long-duration storage in Australia, announcing it has acquired the proposed Bowen Renewable Energy Hub project that is expected to combine 1.4 GW of pumped hydro storage with huge solar and wind generation.

Growatt releases new battery for rooftop solar applications

Growatt’s new APX HV cobalt-free lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery has a storage capacity of 5 kWh and a nominal voltage of 650 V. It can be scaled up to six battery modules, for a maximum capacity of 30 kWh, or 60 kWh in parallel. It comes with a 10-year warranty.

FRV reaches financial close on another solar farm, second big battery to come

FRV Australia has reached financial close on its Walla Walla Solar Farm thanks to a PPA with Microsoft. The company is also progressing its second big battery in Australia, the 250 MW / 500 MWh Gnarwarre battery in Victoria, after winning support from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency.

Shenzhen LiTime Technology’s new lithium iron phosphate battery system has a nominal voltage of 12.8 V and a capacity of 100 Ah. It comes with a five-year warranty and can purportedly operate for more than 4,000 cycles.

Synthetic inertia on show as Wallgrove big battery reaches full capacity

The first large-scale battery to be connected to the grid in New South Wales has officially reached full production, providing fast frequency response and synthetic inertia services to the transmission network as the state looks to fill the soon-to-be-revealed gap created by retiring coal-fired generators.
